Battery B, 1st U.S. Artillery is dedicated to portraying the first Regular Army unit that served at Fort Taylor, Fla. in 1861. Our mission is educational -- to interpret living history for our spectators. We are the Host Unit for the annual Civil War Days held the second weekend in February at Fort Taylor. We also participate in various Civil War reenactments throughout Florida. Our unit is available for interpretive programs about the Civil War and artillery demonstrations for all organizations. The unit is also involved in various community events in Key West, including the annual Veterans Day Parade, Conch Republic Independence Days, and the Pirates in Paradise Festival. We mark all appropriate Federal holidays with cannon volleys fired from Fort Taylor, a National Historic Landmark. The battery drills on a replica 1862 Iron "Ordnance" Rifle field piece and an original 10-inch Rodman cannon on an iron carriage. We also have eight 2-inch cannon and a scale model Coehorn mortar that can be transported to events.
